African World Festival wants to make Detroit designers fashion stars
For over three decades, the African World Festival has provided Detroiters a chance to experience the rich cultural heritage from all corners of the diaspora — drumming, dancing, arts and crafts, storytelling, poetry, food and fashion.
Now organizers want to make sure the D is dressed appropriately at this year’s festival by launching the Detroit Rocks the Runway Emerging Designer Showcase. Selected local designers will see their creations on the runway during the festitval scheduled Aug 15-17 on the grounds of the Chareles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
Currently the showcase is seeking submissions from up-and-coming designers between the ages of 18 and 30. Organizers says participation in the showcase can provide a unique opportunity to expose up-and-coming lines to press, retailers and potential clientele.
Submissions can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line: Detroit Rocks The Runway Emerging Designer Showcase. Applicants should provide any of the following: line sheets, look book, website or other marketing materials. The deadline for entries is July 1.
