Clarence Thomas’ EM Clone

By Sam Riddle

Sitting in the back row of the Wayne State University Law School auditorium that was intentionally too small for the Detroiters that wanted to hear what Governor Nerd’s Black proxy had to say, I wondered why the hell I had come to the damn place.

We were in a quasi-martial law imposed environ with the boys in state blue calling the shots.

It was a crowd containment setting secured with drill ready guns ‘n tazers to go, should the disruptive element roar — state of the art disabling gas was on hand, dogs on standby — gas masks available as needed cover, protect and remove the EM plans had been rehearsed; Robo Cop-like Michigan would’ve been the envy of the Old South.

Yep, it’s like that in the D these days. Who needs STRESS or the Big Four?

A Detroit Free Press reporter asked what I thought as I left the debacle. My comments: “I’m also a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, and I’ve seen this guy before. He sits on the U.S. Supreme Court. His name is Clarence Thomas.” — Sam Riddle, political consultant.

This Clarence Thomas clone was mandated by law to hold the public meeting for a jive azz PowerPoint dog and pony show.

The word “I” was thrown around by a guy that is anything but his own person, and we must not get caught up in the contrived persona of whatever this EM wants us to believe he is whether it’s a Popeyes chicken-eating regular Negro that grew up on butter ‘n sugar “samwiches” that still managed to garner a Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School motivated by thoughts of former slave ancestors or a bad azz bankruptcy lawyer.

This EM guy is not an “I.” This EM is a big time “we” with his conflict-of-interest Jones Day law firm and Gov. Snyder and the Koch brothers and at least a couple of big-time robber baron banks.

If you can’t get to that, stop reading this and slap yourself! Sure, he is well-spoken and seems like a decent enough chap. Bet he’s taken the Dale Carnegie mislead ‘em course…

It’s all a condescending distraction from democracy destroying, union busting a-holes engaged in a white riot to loot Detroit with a Stepin’ Fetchit front man that proclaims his love for Popeyes chicken in a fruitless attempt to establish street cred. Pleeez!

Detroit Raw heard the EM reference Popeyes. Detroit Raw went to Popeyes. Folk there haven’t seen him. The EM, in a Sheila Cockrel inspired generation gap moment, even quoted Eldridge Cleaver. WTF? Cleaver was forgotten back in the day. Don’t play Detroit, Clarence Thomas. We’re hip to you and your band of multi-racial handkerchief heads.

Playing to the not so subtle racist suburban theme that Detroit is infested with addicts, the EM railed against the D being addicted to debt. So the EM is in town for an intervention? KMA. Sounds like America and the world are on a free enterprise binge. Intervene in Washington.

What bothers me is that so few seem truly troubled by the death of democracy in Detroit. Rachel Maddow and Al Sharpton are disgusted, but here in Detroit, there is almost a blase “so we lost the vote, no big deal” mentality that prevails.

As an honorably discharged Vietnam-era veteran, I must ask: Why are American armed forces inflicting, marketing and dying for democracy worldwide when the doors of democracy have been slammed shut in Detroit with imposition of an EM?

I loved hearing young white WSU students speak truth to power along with elders like NAN’s Cindy — we must build coalitions identifying friends and enemies by behavior not race and go forward to restore democracy to Detroit.

Prayers for our Lion that refused to surrender his soul while incarcerated. The Spirit of Mandela lives forever, wherever people fight to be free.

We must never let haters cause us to lose hope or dislike ourselves and never let haters make you weak in your faith. Keep the faith. Stay on the battlefield.
