On Jan. 12, local poets and scholars led a celebration for what would have been the 100th birthday of Detroit’s first poet laureate and the founder of the influential Broadside Press, Dudley Randall. Randall joined the ancestors Aug. 5, 2000. Randall’s life was discussed by those familiar with the man and his legacy, including current Detroit Poet Laureate Dr. Naomi Long Madgett. A mixture of veteran and younger poets read poetry, and Ami Jackson finished the party with a birthday song in Randall’s honor. The Broadside Press continues Randall’s legacy today by mentoring and educating young poets. DALE RICH PHOTOS
