Failing charters expand in Michigan

In 2012, Leona Group, L.L.C. took over the three schools in the struggling Highland Park district. The photo above is shown on the Leona Group’s Web site. It is not the Michigan Highland Park High School.

The Leona Group, a for-profit charter operator that runs the Highland Park and Muskegon Heights School districts, is listed among the “chronically low-performing charter operators” by the Education Trust-Midwest. The Education Trust analyzed charter school operators scheduled to open in Michigan this fall. 

“The analysis shows chronically low-performing operators are continuing to expand rapidly in the state, regardless of what’s best for students. The data demonstrates Michigan needs to seriously consider holding charter authorizers more accountable for school quality,”  the Trust says.  Read more….
