Fashion designer crafts gala out of talent and tragedy
Designer Mark England never stopped sketching, sewing, styling, illustrating and breathing fashion — even after being diagnosed with lymphoma earlier this year. So once the chemotherapy stopped and the doctors cleared him, he went right back to work.
Since then, England has made it a mission to use his skill and trade to raise awareness in the fight against cancer.
Saturday, September 28, in partnership with Karmano’s Cancer Institute, England along with three other featured designers will take over the Detroit Opera House for a night of luxury, elegance and fundraising for a cause. “It’s a feast for the eyes where delectable patterns and modern design do the tango,” says organizers. Iconic design studio, The House of Cedi along with Franklin Rowe International and a special jewelry collection by Carolyn Ferrari are the night‘s “fare.” Designs from England’s store, The Runway, will be available with several pieces prominently featured during the night’s event.
Performances by R&B artist Dwele along with K’Jon, Mario Winans, and Detroit’s own Elijah Connor will entertain those in attendance. Celebrity guests, Shannon “Slam” Ridley of Bad Boy Entertainment and producer Michael J. Powell along with special host Ramona Prater will appear as well. The doors open at 6 p.m. and show begins promptly at 7:30pm. Black tie is optional.
“The champagne will flow for a great cause that night,” said England. “I want people to come [and] I want them to bring their checkbooks. We’re raising money for a great cause.”
