Greater Detroit Restoration Coalition

Left to right: Barry Ross, William Pointer, Robert Robinson, Malik Shabazz, Gabriel Kenyatta and David Troup

Malik Shabazz, who heads The Greater Detroit Restoration Coalition Project, referenced Booker T. Washington’s famous statement, “Cast down your buckets where you are,” and then added, “We love Detroit and we aren’t going to leave it.” This is their philosophy and they were demonstrating their beliefs as they boarded up three houses and cleaned up the landscaping around the houses. This is one stop in the program undertaken by this grassroots self- empowerment group.

The Greater Detroit Restoration Coalition Project Fundraiser will be held June 4 from 3-7 p.m. at McDonald’s at 14124 Woodward in Highland Park. Sen. Coleman Young II, Radio Personality John Mason and Kevin D. Lewis will be special guest servers. All donations will help fund expenses for boarding up abandoned homes in Detroit in efforts to create safer neighborhoods and communities.
