Justice delayed for Aiyana
Jury stuck, judge declares mistrial
DETROIT – Judge Cynthia Hathaway has declared a mistrial in the case of DPD officer Joseph Weekley, who is on trial for the shooting-death of 7-year-old Aiyana Stanley Jones. After three days of deliberation, members of the jury said they are “stuck” and can not reach a verdict.
Aiyana was fatally wounded by Weekley, as she slept on the living room sofa, during a DPD raid on her home in May 2010. The raid was being filmed as part of A&E’s television show “First 48.” Weekley is charged with felony involuntary manslaughter and careless discharge of a firearm causing death.
