DETROIT — Tamara Brown took a leap of faith to begin her own photography business, Preeminent Photography Studio, on the city’s east side.

“I was a customer service representative at Blue Cross Blue Shield for nine years and my friend said to me, ‘Try photography.’ I was reluctant but I fell in love,” said Brown.

The 41-year-old proud parent of five took classes at Ritz Camera studio for one year and received a certificate for photography.

“I am Black-owned and I love what I do,” Brown told the Michigan Citizen.

“I enjoy meeting new people (and) I enjoy making the pictures. … I enjoy shooting the pictures just as I do the backend and the creativity.”

Brown has been a photographer for five years and has been in business for two.

“As a business owner, my biggest struggle is having customers consistently instead of in spurts,” Brown said. “Right after Christmas I barely had clients, but now I am back in business.”

Brown takes a lot of photos for graduating seniors from February to May; wedding photos from June to August; and family/holiday photos from September through December.

Brown often partners with business owners and families to do fundraisers. Sometimes she does the photos at the fundraisers or sets up appointments for her clients to come back to the studio.

“The last fundraiser I did was for the Smith family at Bethel Friendship Baptist church,” Brown said. “I took photos right there at the church.” Brown takes her photos with a digital camera and uses PhotoShop for necessary edits.

“Black and white photos are my favorite,” says Brown, who added that photos she takes of people “unexpectedly” are her best.

Brown photographed the Lupus Walk at the Detroit Zoo in October 2012.

“The Lupus Walk has been the most fulfilling job thus far. It was inspiring,” she said. Brown will take photos at the Breast Cancer Walk in May in Detroit.

Preeminent Photography studio photos start at $30 for family photos, $799 for wedding packages, $99 for senior pictures and $299 for party packages, which include a hardback cover. She also posts pictures on her Web site for family and friends to purchase.

Preeminent Photography Studios is located at 17425 Mack Ave., near Cadieux. For more information, visit preeminentphotos@yahoo.com, find “Preeminent” on Facebook and Instagram or call 313.721.4197.
