Mumford senior Darius Jones, Renaissance senior Essence England named PSL Proud Strong Learners of the Week
Detroit Public School League
Mumford right-hander Darius Jones struck out eight batters in six innings and went three-for-four with three RBI at the plate to lead an 11-9 victory against King. In addition, Jones was named the Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week.
Jones, a senior with a 3.6 grade point average, is primarily the Mustangs’ catcher and is in his fourth season in the varsity.
Jones shares the honor with Renaissance High senior Essence England. England, a four-year varsity player, was four-for-four against Country Day and two-for-two with a walk against Grosse Pointe South while driving in six runs in tough non-league competition during the week of April 21. The defending PSL champion Lady Phoenix are 11-3 overall and 4-0 in the league. England, a center-fielder and shortstop with a .533 batting average, is looking to play at the next level, with Alabama A&M and Alabama State among her college suitors.
The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learners of the Week award are representatives of the league’s top boy and girl athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators.
