PSL spring championship in full swing

The Detroit Public School League’s spring championship season is coming to an end.

In the last two weeks, a frenzy of competition will led to PSL champions being crowned in girls’ softball, boys’ baseball, boys’ and girls’ track-and-field, boys’ golf and girls’ tennis.

The girls’ softball quarterfinals, featuring all 16 teams, were held May 8.

In Division I, Cass Tech played Ford at East English Village, Mumford plays at Denby, King plays at defending league champion Renaissance and East English Village played at Western.

In Division II, Northwestern played Southeastern at Maheras-Gentry, Cody played at Osborn, Pershing played CMA at Stoepel and DIA played at Central.

The winners advanced to the semifinals, May 12. Results were not in went this paper went to print.

The Division I semis were at Renaissance and the Division II semis were at East English Village.

The girls’ softball season concludes with the PSL Division II and Division I championship doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m., May 16, at University of Detroit Mercy. Admission is $5.

The PSL boys’ baseball playoffs open with the semifinals May 16 (teams still to be determined) at 2 and 4 p.m. The East-West semifinals are at East English Village and the Mega semifinals are at Clark Park.

The baseball season concludes May 19 with the annual DPSL Family Fun Night at Comerica Park, featuring the East-West and Mega championship doubleheader at 4:30 and 7 p.m., respectively. Gates open at 4 p.m. Admission is $5. Western is the defending PSL champion.

The PSL Division I girls’ tennis championship meet was May 12 at Barcus Tennis Center and the Division II championship meet was May 13 at Barcus. Competition starts each day at 9:30 a.m.

The PSL boys’ golf championship meet was May 14 at Palmer Park. Tee time is about 9 a.m.

The PSL boys’ and girls’ track-and-field preliminaries and field event finals take place May 19, at 5 p.m. and the track championship meet is May 22, at 5 p.m.

PSL baseball results, May 8

Central 10, Cody 4: Deangelo Bell went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Eugene White went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Emanuel Dawson went 2-for-2 with two RBIs for Central (4-5).

Renaissance 12, Cass Tech 0 (5 inn.): Daniel Little struck out seven and gave up one hit in five innings for Renaissance (5-10, 4-4 PSL Mega). Little also went 3-for-4 with two triples, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Jordan Christian went 3-for-4 and Kanzoni Ramsey and Brandon Wilson each had two hits.
