Olympic Gold medalist Claressa Shields, a Flint native, was honored Aug. 15 by the state Legislature in both the House and Senate upon her return from the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England. Shields, 17, won Aug. 9 the Olympics’ first-ever women’s boxing event when she defeated Russia’s Nadezda Torlopova. On her way to the gold, the middleweight boxer dominated Marina Volnova from Kazakhstan, Aug. 8, in the semifinals and beat Anna Laurell in the quarterfinals, Aug. 6.
