Shop caters to mature men

DETROIT — Art Parham has always liked to dress well; the “brotha” likes being sharp. Therefore it isn’t surprising Parham owns a clothing store. He and his partner, James Smith, own That’s You Apparel and Mr. J’s, a men’s store located in the Russell Bazaar.
Parham, a native Detroiter, said he has been in business for 10 years, the last four at the bazaar. That’s You sells casual dress, what Parham refers to as “that grown man look.”
He said the store doesn’t sell a lot of hip hop or urban wear. “We sell clothes you can wear to church or a concert,” Parham said. “We cater to older men.”
Parham said there is a need for an adult look in the community and That’s You attempts to fulfill that need. He sells the same things as Hot Sam’s and other downtown stores but doesn’t get the foot traffic, he says. To attract buyers, Parham says he passes out flyers and cards. He also belonged to the Russell Bazaar Vendor’s Association before it dissolved.
Parham said business fluctuates with the economy. Currently, business is a bit slow because the economy is slow. However, Parham hired an employee, Michael Brown, in July. “Our long-range goal is to open a storefront,” Parham he told The Michigan Citizen. “But this is right for now.”
Parham’s advice to a young person with a desire to open a business is to “go to school, learn the ins and outs of business, learn business from the scholastic level first.”
That’s You Apparel is located at 1600 Clay. Call That’s You at 313.575.8890 or Mr. J’s at 734.657.8913.
