Shop serves it sweet

DETROIT — Ronald Garrett and Tanisha Washington were riding east on McNichols when they saw the sign and decided to stop in. “I like how organized it is,” Washington said.

“It’s unique,” Garrett said.

Welcome to Lucki’s Cheesecake. If you like cheesecake, there’s nothing more to say. Owned by Rhonda Morris, Lucki’s, located at 7111 W. McNichols, sells over 35 flavors of cheesecake; cake; cobbler; and diabetic/sugar-free dessert. Lucki’s also has a create-your-own cheesecake service, in which, “if you can dream it, we can do it!” Customers can choose an array of flavor combinations to create their ideal cheesecake.

Morris gives her daughter, Lucki, all the credit for founding the business. “I was walking down the street, bruised my toe and couldn’t walk the next day,” Morris said. “I was told, after tests in the hospital, the infection was caused by where I worked.”

Morris said her daughter, a medical student at Wayne State University, told her, “Mom, I’m going to create a business especially for you.”

And she did. When you visit Lucki’s, you’ll find the owner is as sweet as her products and the environment is inviting. She’s been in business seven years, even servicing some of the larger local restaurants. She has three employees.

Sahar Hmeidan, a regular customer, purchased a cherry cheesecake for Eid Al-Fitr, a holiday concluding the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, where among other practices Muslims are required to fast daily from dawn until dark, refraining from food and beverages.

“Lucki taught me all I know about business,” Morris said.
