U.S. Lance Corporal Steven Prince Stevens II of Detroit, Michigan was laid to rest July 2 — 11 days before his 24th birthday — at Mount Hope Memorial Gardens in Livonia. His home-going services were held at Hope United Methodist Church in Southfield. Stevens was killed June 22 while on patrol in Afghanistan when his platoon was ambushed, according to reports. A Detroit Technology High School graduate, Stevens attended Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University on a swim scholarship in 2006. He swam for the YMCA Neptunes, the East Side “Y” Dolphins, the Farmington HIlls Seals, the Adam Butzel Tigersharks and the Southfield Swim Club, as well as Pershing High School’s swim team. He joined the U.S. Marine Corp in 2009. Stevens and his wife, Monique, became parents March 29, 2012, when their son, Kairo Prince Stevens, was born; he never got to see his son. He leaves to celebrate his life his wife; his parents, Steven and Lois Stevens; maternal grandmother, Dorothy Atkins; and a host of family and friends.
