The Way We Were

Errol Henderson (center) and fellow Wayne State University students negotiate during an 11-day student protest in 1989, taking over and holding a campus building. As a result of their action, Wayne State President David Adamany agreed to their demands and expanded the Black Studies department with the creation of the Africana Studies Department.

Each week “The Way We Were” will feature a photograph from our collective past. Send us your favorite images of friends and family at cabarets, family reunions, school dances or just hanging out. Tell us as much about the photo as you can, names or places. The photos are history — our story.

Email all images to, mail with self-addressed stamped envelope or visit The Michigan Citizen’s office and we will scan your photos and return them to you on the spot.
