Western, E. English Village win PSL baseball titles

DPS Family Fun Night at Comerica Park is becoming a tradition. Western International High School’s habit of winning Detroit Public School League baseball championships is already one.
Coach Juan Sanchez’s Cowboys (12-0 league, 16-5-1 overall) have not lost to a PSL team in three seasons and they once again exerted their dominance May 19, as senior Louis Chapa pitched a complete-game, one-hit 6-0 shutout against King (7-4 league, 9-13 overall) in the PSL Mega Division championship game at Comerica Park.
The victory extended Western’s PSL baseball championship streak to seven years in a row and was its ninth in 11 seasons. «There’s a fine line between arrogance and confidence, and we’ve managed to stay on the right side of the line,’’ Sanchez said.|
East English Village, in only its second year as a school, is also building a winning baseball tradition. Coach Elbert Williams’ Bulldogs (11-1 league, 14-2 overall) won the East-West Division title for the second year in a row with a 13-1 victory against Henry Ford (7-5 league and overall). Senior pitcher Trevon Godfrey struck out 11 in five innings for the Bulldogs.
Between games of the championship doubleheader, players chosen to the PSL All-City baseball and softball teams introduced themselves during an on-field ceremony — part of the festivities in the fifth year of DPS Family Fun Night at Comerica Park.
