YZ Perry, aka Carl Perry
YZ Perry, aka Carl Perry, was born in Bessmore, Ala., June 22, 1921.
At an early age, Carl Perry served in the U.S. Army where he obtained an honorable discharge and then attended Fenn College in Ohio before coming to Detroit, where he lived the rest of his life. He married Delores Scott in 1953 and they remained married until her death in 1997 after 44 years.
As a photographer, he photographed most of the graduates from the Detroit Public Schools in the 1960s as well as many celebrities including the legendary Holiday. He was a master wedding and portrait photographer. He worked his craft at his studio on 12th Street for 50 years. In fact, he had the last post-riot business on 12th Street, which was located directly across from Economy Printing, where the 1967 Detroit riot began. There, for many decades, he displayed his work.
He was a mentor for many in his community and was loved by many.
On Sunday, Dec. 4, he died at 90 years of age from heart failure.
He leaves to mourn his family in Birmingham, a first cousin Eddie Mae Jackson from Jackson, Miss., and four children, Audrey Perry-Doe, Deborah Perry, Alan, James and a Sister Inez Dickerson, of Birmingham, Ala.
